Community based monitoring of biodiversity in northern Quebec / Nunavik

We are currently seeing significant changes on the land. The climate is changing, development is intensifying and new species are arriving or adjusting their range: all factors that are likely to transform the landscape and the species inhabiting it. Against this backdrop, it is increasingly important to monitor changes in habitats, animal and plant communities. Therefore, the Québec government, the ministère de Forêts de la Faune et de Parcs and the ministère de l’Environnement et de la Lutte aux Changements climatiques, are working to implement a monitoring program of biodiversity in Québec.

This will consist in creating an inventory of the living species in the area, both plants and animals (e.g. fish, birds, insects), in order to assess diversity and certain characteristics (e.g. date of their emergence or arrival). The primary objective is to identify short- and long-term changes in habitats, communities and populations. This monitoring is intended to help anticipate certain changes and assess their impact. It also aims to improve the integration and sharing of information about natural environments.
